Though it would be 40 some odd years before the city of Stamford would be federally incorporated, the history of this city truly began in the mid 16oos. The actual deed to the land in which Stamford was founded was signed July 1st, 1640 by colonists and the chief of the local Siwanoy Native American tribe. This city was mainly used as a merchandising harbor because of its close proximity to New York City.
After becoming a major building site for new York City residents who were only an hour away, located in Fairfield County, Connecticut, Stamford was finally incorporated as a city in 1983.
It was during the Revolutionary War that Fort Stamford was raised to help ward off British troops. This site is now known as a historical park that, the Stamford, CT locals frequent.
Proudly known as “the city that works” with a more than significant industrial presence that started with the electric shaver industry, this city has seen the growth in population as it became the “It City” as it housed a multitude of company headquarters and office branches. Today, Stamford harbors nine Fortune 500 companies and its financial district is the largest in the area of the heavy hitters nearby, apart from the ever famous Wall Street district in the Big Apple.
